Why is that sunny bench too hot to touch? Ola’s dog seeks shade across the square. The old tree’s crown blocks some of the sunlight. Cool earth below lets both of them rest. A bird sings; an insect visits flowers. A quick shower runs down among the roots. They hold the soil and help the rain soak in. Little tree, such a big help. Growing slowly, year by year. It gives us shade and animals a home. It helps the whole neighborhood. How do green leaves help a tree to grow? They use sunlight and water for its growth. They also take a gas from the air. Its name is carbon dioxide. As they do, the leaves release oxygen. Little tree, such a big help. Growing slowly, year by year. It gives us shade and animals a home. It helps the whole neighborhood. Ola and a grown-up choose the right place. They spread the roots and cover them with soil. They water and guard it through each season. Little tree, such a big help. Growing slowly, year by year. It gives us shade and animals a home. It helps the whole neighborhood. Years later, her family picnics in its shade. Flowers feed insects; branches shelter nests. That little sapling now helps the neighborhood.
